On 24 June 2019, the IBAHRI joined Lawyers for Lawyers, Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada and the International Services for Human Rights to deliver a joint statement calling upon the Special Rapporteur on Independence of Judges and Lawyers, and the UN Human Rights Council, to insist that China immediately stop all forms of harassment and persecution of human rights lawyers, in the country.

IBAHRI highlights attacks against lawyers in China, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and China at Human Rights Council

On 1 July 2019, the IBAHRI, Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada and Lawyers for Lawyers delivered an oral statement during the 41st UN Human Rights Council session concerning attacks against lawyers in China, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The statement urged the Council to insist that these States halt the violations and uphold human rights or face suspension from membership. It also called for the establishment of an independent investigation into human rights violations in the Philippines.

IBAHRI and IDHUCA highlight extrajudicial killings in El Salvador at 41st Human Rights Council session

On 26 June, IBAHRI and the Instituto de Derechos Humanos de la Universidad Centroamericana (IDHUCA) delivered an oral statement on El Salvador during the interactive dialogue of the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions. Among other things, the oral statement raised concern regarding the authorities’ failure to effectively investigate extrajudicial executions in accordance with international standards.

IBAHRI’s Tunisia project: 2018–2021

In 2018, the IBAHRI partnered with the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Tunisia and the Tunisian Administrative Tribunal on a project to increase the ability of administrative judges, lawyers and civil society actors to adjudicate, litigate and report violations of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR).

Challenges to the Independence of the Legal Profession under the State of Emergency in Turkey - Advocacy Factsheet

From 18 - 22 June 2018, the International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) and the Law Society of England and Wales hosted a delegation of Turkish Lawyers during the 38th session of the Human Rights Council. The week’s activities included a training on UN Human Rights Mechanisms, several meetings with UN representatives, NGOs and State missions, as well as a side event on the situation of the legal profession in Turkey.

IBAHRI statements on Turkey at the 37th Session of the Human Rights Council

On 1 March, on behalf of the IBAHRI and five other organisations, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) delivered an oral statement at the Human Rights Council’s 37th session. In the statement, the ICJ urged the Council to address the attack on lawyers and threats to the independence of the legal profession around the world with a particular emphasis China, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkey as examples of where such attacks had occurred.

Myanmar: UN Human Rights Council votes on inquiry into abuses

Myanmar is once again high on the agenda at the United Nations, as the country’s leadership faces heavy criticism over alleged human rights violations committed against Rohingya Muslims. On 16 March, the European Union called for an inquiry into the abuses and, a day later, China and Russia blocked a Security Council statement of concern about the situation.
